With Jjajja Magatto’s support and the encouragement of people in the community, Richard persevered through primary school and secondary school. Education became more than a classroom experience: it was a pathway toward possibilities that had once seemed far away. Step by step, he continued despite the difficulties that had shaped his early life. Richard later joined Makerere University, one of Africa’s leading universities, with the support of government sponsorship.
Reaching university represented an important milestone, but it also reflected the
contribution of people and opportunities along the way. Perseverance matters, yet people should not be expected to overcome every barrier entirely by themselves. Encouragement, access, resources, and the willingness of others to open doors can make a meaningful difference.
This part of the journey helped shape a lasting understanding: support should not take away a person’s agency or determine their future for them. It should help create the conditions in which they can
learn, make choices, develop their abilities, and pursue their own goals.
The lesson extends well beyond Richard’s experience. A child who receives school materials, a young person who finds a mentor, or a student who gains access to an educational opportunity may be able to take a step that changes the course of their life. When communities invest in people and remove barriers to opportunity, they help make a future possible that might otherwise have remained out of reach.
