THE GLOBAL SAMARITANS

Our story begins on the Ssese Islands of Lake Victoria, in Uganda’s Kalangala District. For many families in these island communities, life has been shaped by the uncertainty of fishing livelihoods, poverty, limited access to essential services, and the challenges of reaching opportunities on the mainland. These barriers can make education, healthcare, and economic security difficult to access, especially for families already living with very few resources. During the 1990s and early 2000s, HIV-related

deaths took a painful toll on many families.

Children lost parents, households struggled to remain stable, and some young people faced an uncertain future before they had the chance to build one. Behind every hardship was a person, a family, and a community trying to find a way forward.

Yet the Ssese Islands were not defined by hardship alone. People continued to care for neighbours, share what they could, and step forward when someone

nearby needed help. This spirit of community—people refusing to leave others to face difficult circumstances alone—forms an important part of the foundation of The Global Samaritans.

Our story is rooted in a real place and a real community, but the lesson reaches far beyond the islands: when people come together with compassion and practical support, even a difficult beginning does not have to determine the rest of a person’s life.
